1969 Pontiac Firebird Restoration
CHECK back regularly, as we document a custom 1969 Pontiac Firebird Restoration project performed by a Pooler local. We'll be sure to add plenty of pictures & share hard learned ~ helpful advice. We hope this information will benefit you with your own classic auto restoration, or serve to edge you towards beginning a classic restoration project of your own. Vintage American 1964 - 1972 muscle /pony cars are rapidly being purchased by enthusiasts.
If you plan to perform a muscle ~ pony car restoration, we recommend you find your dream car - today, even if you won’t have the time or money to restore it until years later. With the market red hot for these autos, it’s becoming difficult to locate the most desired models. Most surviving vehicles have either already been restored, or went to the scrap yard… years ago.
This 1969 Pontiac Firebird V8 Sport Coupe started life at the GM Pontiac Manufacturing Plant in Van Nuys, California as vehicle number 17,155 - V8 Coupe. This car was built the 4th week of February in 1969...
Just in time for the historically significant "Summer of 69'."
Because the original engine and drive train (transmission & rear end) were replaced at least once during the car's long life, it is difficult to know the exact original equipment specifications.
Our Internet and publications research has lead us to believe the most likely stock version of this car was:
• Firebird Coupe
• 2 BBL. V8 - leaded regular gasoline - 350 Cubic inch
• 3 speed manual transmission - floor shift
• Standard flat “350” hood
• Four wheel drum brakes
• Manual crank windows
• Front fender radio antenna
• No air conditioning
• Antique gold exterior paint with a black vinyl top
• Medium gold vinyl interior
The custom Firebird restoration we plan to create from this old cancer ridden - 40 year old - General Motors Pony Car carcass, will likely include:
• 100% frame-off restoration (using all new or better than new parts and restoration practices).
• Much lighter than stock vehicle - using modern performance full frame (no leaf springs or old sub-frame). Also to include hood, fenders and possibly other body parts made of Fiberglass.
• 400+ CID Chevy SB with 450 HP + (regular gas) fresh rebuild
• All modern performance engine related components, radiator, etc.
• Dana 60 performance rear end (1971)
• 6 speed performance transmission (new)
• Functional Firebird 400 hood with Tac
• Functional fender vents (for engine compartment) (TA style)
• Exterior paint - custom yellow with black trim - custom stripes, etc.
• Custom leather interior, dash - all today's best materials
• Four wheel performance disc brakes
• Best air conditioning system available
• Performance sound and entertainment systems
• Double routed dual exhaust (quiet or loud with switch plate)
We'll begin to post unneeded 1969 firebird parts for sale - soon. We have plenty of original parts we don't plan to use in this semi-custom firebird project.
