During the Civil War, the town was a railway stop called Pooler's Station; the last stop before Savannah on the Central of Georgia Railroad. In December 1864, it was a meeting place for Union officers led by William Tecumseh Sherman, who negotiated with Savannah authorities for the strategic port city's peaceful surrender. The route used for General Sherman’s March to the Sea - meanders through our fair city. Today, the city is the center for commercial development in west Chatham County. Godley Station, the focal point for business expansion, has been successful in attracting large companies such as JCB (J.C. Bamford) to the area. A low crime rate, an impressive educational system, affordable housing and real estate opportunities, stable employment, a strong leisure and recreational program, along with a welcoming small town community - have all been factors in its explosive growth (90% since 2000).
