The selections of an independent contractor or consultant providing professional services is usually based on skill, knowledge, reputation, ethics, and creativity. Prices for services, even within the same field, vary greatly. Some professional service providers are able to give fixed rates for projects, while others define the price only after assessing the work involved. For this reason, it is common to hire professionals based upon an hourly fee and an estimated length of project (scope).

Pooler's Mega-Site

Pooler's mega-site was originally built for the Dymler Chrysler Sprinter van plant. Since that time: Audi, Mercedes-Benz (twice), Ford and then in 2006, Kia was eyeing the site. Kia ultimately built their new plant in West Georgia. Boeing and Rolls Royce have also investigated building plants at the Pooler mega industrial site. Volkswagon and Carbon Motors were seriously considering a plant here, but ultimately decided not to build in Pooler.

In 2009 the Pooler Mega-Site finally got its first tenant. Mitsubishi Power Systems (MPSA) will spend $325 million to put a new, state-of-the-art manufacturing plant at the Pooler mega-site, bringing 500 high-tech jobs! The plant will be constructed in three phases and will start hiring in 2010.

Jasper Ocean Terminal

According to The South Carolina State Ports Authority (SCSPA):

"South Carolina and Georgia are seeking to work cooperatively to develop a new marine terminal on the Savannah River in Jasper County. Based on an intergovernmental agreement, the site is now jointly owned by the two port authorities and preliminary market, transportation, environmental and dredged material work is underway. A bi-state agreement and compact approved by each state's General Assembly and the U.S. Congress will be developed to cover the financing and operation of the project, as well as other issues."

Competitive bidding process is under way for this port project on the Savannah River in Jasper County.

In the past, receiving products from Asia required shipping to the West Coast, then land shipping to the most populated part of America, the New England region. This over-land shipping is very expensive. Because the Panama Canal is being overhauled, it will soon beome more economical for the bulk of U.S.A destined goods to travel through our southeastern ports.
