Native Medicinal Plants

Here’s your chance to discover uses of our native plants both gentle and powerful! Savannah’s specialist in naturopathic healing, Peter Brodhead, will lead you through the sheltered zone of bottomland forest discussing historical and current medicinal uses for native plants. Discover the joy of birding with Diana Churchill, local birding expert and author of the popular Birder’s Eye View newspaper column. Diana will help you meet some of the long distance flyers that visit the Georgia coast, and provide her enlightening commentary. You’ll discover some of the mysteries and dynamics of our wide, flat beaches, and find out who hides under the sand, and what they’re hiding from. After basic canoeing instruction, our WiSE naturalist will lead the way downstream past stately cypress and twisted tupelo. Following the slow flow of clear black water toward the ocean you’ll enjoy a peaceful, easy paddle through shade tunnels and open, sunny expanses. There’s beauty around every bend. We'll be on the lookout for turtles, herons, and noisy kingfishers diving for their next meal. We may be lucky enough to spot a shy alligators sunning in the shallows. Meet in Rincon, GA. You'll go with the flow of clear black water heading toward the estuary and ocean as your WiSE naturalist guides and explains the river swamp ecosystem at work. Salt Marsh by Land & Sea; 3 hours

An easy opportunity to kayak the tidal creeks and salt marshes and to learn the fascinating systems, biotic and abiotic, that influence our richly productive marshes. Your Wilderness Southeast Naturalist Guide will enthrall you with tales of this place, from the earliest humans on these shores to the variety of wildlife that lives here. After observing marsh life near shore, and brief paddling instructions, you’ll be gliding over protected waters beginning in open channels and maneuvering into narrow passages between tall marsh grass. You’ll observe the richness and rhythms of estuary life. It's common for dolphin to surface close to your kayak, and for osprey or bald eagles to soar overhead. We'll step out to stretch our legs and briefly explore a wild shore. $55 per person; tour size 4 to 10 people for an intimate, personal experience. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED.

An easy stroll along the trail allows your naturalist guide to help you explore this dynamic and fascinating ecosystem that has supported humans on this coast throughout history. Come learn the fascinating inner workings of this rich natural resource that shelters, cleanses, and protects. Alternately submerged beneath salt water and baked under the sun, the plants and animals of this unique wilderness are highly specialized. Discover the drama of life in the mud and salt. Meet at Skidaway Island, GA. $25 per person; tour size 4 to 12 participants. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED.

Cruise the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge

The back channels of the mighty Savannah River are too shallow for large boats. This tour is a unique chance to travel channels soon to be made even more difficult to access. Your WiSE captain will maneuver the twists and turns, your naturalist guide showing you seldom seen sections of this 29,000 acre National Wildlife Refuge. You may choose to step ashore on 200-year old dikes to explore the eco-history of river swamp turned rice plantation turned Wildlife Refuge. Of course we'll be on the lookout for turtles, alligators, and the many migrating birds that flock to this protected expanse of wetland.$75 per person; tour size 5 to 12 people. Sept. 26, 2010 (Sun): Full Day Tour Customized for you Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge Reserve this full day of boating and beachcombing for your group of up to six people. Our local captain and his knowledge of these waters provides this rare opportunity to explore this unique barrier island. Fascinating human history, a glorious boneyard beach to hike, dune meadows teeming with wildlife, and sandbars with incredible concentrations of shorebirds all await on this least visited of our Savannah Complex of Wildlife Refuges. A bonus is a deliciously relaxing boat ride through Georgia's rich and productive salt marshes. Fee is $500 for the day. Meet near Richmond Hill, GA. Savannah River Eco-History Tour by Motorboat

Take a motorboat journey back in time. Beginning amidst the bustle of the harbor, you’ll travel upstream through the bustling and industrial Savannah Harbor, to the serene expanse of the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. Your guide will describe the history of human uses of the river from the days of rice plantations to the present day industrial landscape, and how these activities have changed the river and its tidal wetlands. See the 18th Century's ingenious harnessing of the tides, and enjoy the serenity of that century on the river. $75 per person; tour size 5 to 12 people. Meet at the River in downtown Savannah. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED.

Wild Island & Estuary; Wassaw Island National Wildlife Refuge

Enjoy your motorboat ride through the estuary to the pristine wilderness of Wassaw Island National Wildlife Refuge. As your official naturalist guide gives you a new angle on the coast, your open boat will meander the watery twists and turns between walls of bright green marsh grass. Discover the life that depends on the rich estuarine waters as you observe dolphins, egrets, crabs, and even oysters from your boat, then stroll the spectacular beach and forest of this gorgeous island, learning the ecology and human history as you go. Meet on Wilmington Island, Savannah. Free is $55/person; Tour size is 5-6 people. Reservations required.
